General Information

Students are scheduled for clinical and didactic assignments on five days each week, and includes weekends and evening shifts during the two-year training period. As a component of radiologic technology training, students will perform clinical assignments at United Hospital Center and other healthcare facilities affiliated with UHC School of Radiologic Technology. Administration of the program is through United Hospital Center and all didactic classes are taught at United Hospital Center.

Classes begin during the last of June each year, but selection of students is completed by April 1. Applications and other required documentation must be postmarked by February 1 of the year in which the student hopes to gain admission. Student selection is a two-part process that begins with a review of student academic transcripts. An impartial scoring system is used to rank applicants on the basis of performance in the following recommended prerequisites - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy/Physiology, Computer Science, Algebra and other advanced Maths. Courses may be taken through high school or college, with credit awarded based upon the course grade point average. A lesser amount of credit is given for courses taken through business colleges or technical programs.

United Hospital Center’s School of Radiologic Technology charges a tuition of $6,000 for the training period, which is payable in quarterly installments of $750. United Hospital Center’s School of Radiologic Technology does NOT participate in Federal Financial Aid; therefore, students may not receive student loans or federal grants to offset educational costs.

An Associate of Applied Science Degree at Pierpont Community and Technical College is now available as an admission option for students entering United Hospital Center School of Radiologic Technology. In addition to completing the UHC graduation requirements, additional general education courses are required. This admission option provides access to federal financial aid programs and the WV PROMISE Scholarship to offset school-related expenses.

If you are interested in this admission option you must complete and submit an Application for Admission to Pierpont Community and Technical College. This may be done by requesting an application at the Clarksburg or Fairmont campuses, calling 304-367-4000 or online at http://www.pierpont.edu.

Enrollment FAQs

Q. Does everyone who attends UHC S of RT have to take college classes?

A. The JRCERT, which is the agency that accredits the rad tech program, requires that ALL students complete FIFTEEN hours of general education college courses as a REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION. The courses may be taken before the student begins training or while the student is in training. UHC S of RT requires that the fifteen general education credits be completed by the end of the Fall semester of the second year.

Q. I am coming directly from high school and have taken a few Dual Credit courses. Will these count?

A. Yes! The general education college courses may be taken before or during training. The only requirement is that the student complete courses in College Math, Basic English (1104 at FSU) and Oral Communications (formerly called Speech). These courses will earn the student 9 credits. Six additional credits must be completed from elective courses; you may choose from Arts/Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Information Processing. Courses must be successfully completed by the end of the Fall semester of the second year.

Q. I have taken college courses before entering UHC S of RT. Do I still need to take additional courses?

A. Maybe not! As long as you have met the requirements of 15 general education credits and the completed courses include College Math, Basic English (1104 at FSU) and Oral Communications (formerly called Speech), you will meet the graduation requirements. You should submit your college transcript to UHC program faculty to ensure that your courses are compatible.

Q. If I have already met general education course requirements prior to starting training at UHC S of RT, is it necessary for me to apply for admission through Pierpont Community and Technical College?

A. Whether you enroll through the college or directly with UHC will depend upon your educational goals, as described below:

1. If you would like to receive an associate or baccalaureate degree when you complete the program, then you need to enroll through PC&TC so that you receive college credit for all the rad tech courses taken at UHC. This is true for those taking college courses now or those who have previously completed the general education course requirements. You will be required to take additional college courses for degree completion.

2. If you would like to use the PROMISE Scholarship, WV Higher Education Grant or any type of federal financial aid to fund your training, then it is necessary to enroll through the college. In this case, the college will charge you for tuition and your financial awards will be sent directly to Pierpont C&TC. The college will reimburse UHC for your tuition costs, so you do not need to pay UHC. (Although you will receive a monthly tuition statement from UHC for informational purposes only.)

3. If you are enrolled at Alderson-Broaddus College, WV Northern C&TC or any other college that has a degree program in Rad Tech, your college will likely develop a consortium agreement with UHC for the period of time that you attend classes here. You did not need to enroll at PC&TC, but will still need to complete the same fifteen hours of general education course requirements by the end of the Fall semester of the second year so that you may graduate from UHC S of RT. (College Math, Basic English and Oral Communications plus six additional elective credits from Arts/Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Information Processing.)

4. If you have previously completed fifteen general educational course credits in the prescribed areas (whether or not you completed a degree program), have no interest in receiving an associate degree from Pierpont C&TC, and have no need for financial aid, then you may enroll directly with UHC. Upon completing the rad tech courses at UHC, you will receive a diploma certificate that will make you eligible to pursue certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to receive your credentials to practice the profession.

Q. What if I choose NOT to complete the general education requirements by the end of the Fall semester of the second year of training at UHC S of RT or do not pass all of the prerequisite general education courses?

A. The fifteen credit hour general education requirement is NOT optional. ALL students are required to successfully complete fifteen general education course credits by the end of the Fall semester of the second year in the areas prescribed above. Failure to do so will result in the withholding of your diploma certificate and will delay your eligibility to take the registry exam and pursue certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to practice the profession. You will not be employable until such time that you meet graduation requirements.

ETHICS STANDARDS

Following successful completion of UHC Radiologic Technology, the graduate is eligible to apply for professional certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Successfully passing the ARRT registry exam is a requirement for employment in WV. The ARRT promotes high standards of ethics among candidates for certification and may render an individual ineligible for past criminal convictions including felonies, gross misdemeanors or misdemeanors. All alcohol or drug-related convictions must be reported and are reviewable by the ARRT.

Interested individuals, who may be concerned about the impacts of past convictions on eligibility for professional certification are strongly encouraged to pursue more information from the ARRT by calling 651.687.0048 or www.arrt.org.
