Sialogram

Your physician has referred you to the Diagnostic Services Department at United Hospital Center for a Sialogram.

A Sialogram is an x-ray examination of the saliva producing glands in the mouth. This examination is performed by inserting a blunted needle into the mouth or under the tongue where the ducts are present. Once the blunt needle is in the duct, a small amount of contrast (x-ray dye) medium is injected. After the contrast injection, the study is recorded on x-ray film.

Although there are risks involved, such as infection, reaction to the contrast medium, and/or puncture of the salivary gland, your physician feels the benefits of this procedure outweigh the risks and would aid in the diagnosis of your medical condition.

LENGTH: Approximately 45 minutes

If you are pregnant, or think you might be, tell your doctor and the technologist BEFORE your exam.
