Nuclear Gastric Emptying Scan

Your physician has referred you to the Diagnostic Services Department at United Hospital Center for a Gastric Emptying Scan.

The indications for this exam are abnormal rates of gastric emptying found in many disease states (diabetes) and may be the result of surgical procedures.

You are required to have nothing to eat or drink for six (6) hours before the test and this test should be performed BEFORE any barium studies.

After arriving in the Diagnostic Services Department, you will be given a special meal of milk and egg, which has been prepared with a small amount of radioactive material.

After eating this meal, you will be positioned for images to be obtained for 90 minutes.
