Nephrostrogram

Your physician has referred you to the Diagnostic Services Department at United Hospital Center for a Nephrostogram.

The purpose of a Nephrostogram is to study the condition of the kidney and the placement of the nephrostomy tube. This involves injections of contrast medium (x-ray dye) into the nephrostomy tube. This contrast medium can give you a sensation of pressure in your kidney, but that will go away when the contrast is removed.

Upon arrival in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, you will be asked to sign a consent form. You will then be placed on a radiographic table where the radiologist will begin the procedure. When the exam is completed, there are no restrictions unless already specified by your physician.

While a nephrostogram is a relatively simple exam, it is not completely free of complications. A complication that can occur is reaction to the contrast medium. No preparation is required for the exam.

LENGTH: Approximately 45 minutes

If your are pregnant, or think you might be, tell your doctor and the technologist BEFORE your exam.
