Gallbladder (Oral Cholecystogram)
Your physician has referred you to the Diagnostic Services Department for an oral cholecystogram or gallbladder series. In order for the gallbladder to be visualized on x-ray film you will be asked to take 6 capsules that are composed of contrast material, each evening of the two days prior to your exam. You will also be restricted to a fat-free diet for supper and nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day before your exam.
For this exam you will be asked to wear a hospital gown. When you arrive in the Diagnostic Services Department you will be taken into one of the examination rooms. The technologist will take a preliminary film of your abdomen to see if your gallbladder visualized. If your gallbladder has visualized, you will be positioned behind a piece of equipment called a fluoroscope. The radiologist or technologist will then take several images of your gallbladder, asking you to assume different positions. You will be asked to hold your breath while the images are taken. Once the images are checked, you will be allowed to leave.
LENGTH: Approximately 30 minutes
If your are pregnant, or think your might be, tell your doctor and the technologist BEFORE your exam.
