Electromyography

Your physician has referred you to the Diagnostic Services Department at United Hospital Center for an Electromyography exam (EMG).

An EMG is used to diagnose diseases of the nerves and muscles.

The nerves are stimulated with small electrical shocks. The muscles are examined by tiny skin pricks done with a small disposable needle in the area being examined. The test is performed by a Neurologist and a trained technologist.

Before the exam, you may eat and take your medications as usual. You need to bath or shower the morning of the exam, but please avoid creams or lotions. There is some discomfort during the test, but is should be tolerated well.

When you have symptoms related to your lower back or legs, it would be helpful for you to wear loose fitting clothes, avoiding tight jeans and stockings.

LENGTH: Approximately 30 minutes
