Dining with Diabetes at UHC

March 27th, 2012

Diabetes is a common, serious and costly disease.  United Hospital Center and the West Virginia University Harrison County Extension Office is announcing the launch dates for two Dining with Diabetes classes.

United Hospital Center and West Virginia University Harrison County Extension Office is offering two dining with diabetes classes at UHC.

Dining with Diabetes is a once-a-week class that runs for four consecutive weeks with a three month follow-up class.  The following is the class schedule:

EVENING PROGRAM AT UHC:  May 1, 8, 15, 22 and July 31* from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

or

AFTERNOON PROGRAM AT UHC:  May 2, 9, 16, 23 and August 1* from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

* = Follow-Up Session

Classes are for those with diabetes and their family members.  The classes are free to participants and they must attend all class sessions.

Participants learn how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to prepare and tasty.  Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to taste each one.

 Participants will also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning and exercise and how to understand common diabetes-related medical tests.  Recipes and handouts will be given to each participant.

Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels, eat healthy and exercise regularly can lower their risk of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life. "If you are an adult and have been told that you have type 2 diabetes, you will want to consider participating in this program," said Mary Frances Veltri, RN, CDE diabetes education coordinator at UHC.

Dining with Diabetes is offered statewide and is sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service with partial funding provided by the West Virginia Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, Bureau for Public Health.  For more information concerning the Dining with Diabetes program at UHC please call the Harrison County Extension office to register at 304.624.8650.  Space is limited.
