Laboratory Services

United Hospital Center's Laboratory provides services to patients and physicians in Harrison and surrounding counties to treat, diagnose and prevent disease.

Under the direction of board certified pathologists, medical technologists and technicians, the laboratory delivers services in phlebotomy, blood bank and transfusion services, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, histology, cytology and coagulation.

All testing requires a written order from the patient's physician. Some testing requires that the patient is fasting, i.e., nothing to eat or drink, before the specimen is drawn. If there is a question about fasting, the patient should consult his/her ordering physician or he/she can call the lab.

Appointments are not needed for most routine lab testing. Outpatients may come to the main lab at UHC from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. If a patient is unable to arrive between these hours, he/she may come to the main lab, located in the basement, which is open 24 hours a day.

Off Site Lab Locations:

Clarksburg Clinic, first floor
(8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday)

Monthly Health Fair:

Maternal Child Services

The new maternity suites at UHC are designed with many of the little touches to help you feel more at home during your labor, delivery and recovery. Each private room features a birthing bed that converts to a regular bed after delivery and a chair that converts into a bed for your coach. We have unlimited visiting hours for siblings, grandparents and dads. A special celebration dinner for two is served in your room.

In 1994 UHC introduced "family-centered single room maternity care" to our patients. This concept means that instead of being moved from room to room a woman can labor, deliver, recover and spend postpartum in the same room.

UHC also offers a comprehensive set of education classes including childbirth, sibling tour and explore, breast feeding, childbirth refresher, newborn care and VBAC.

Obstetrics observes "Quiet Time" from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.† Please speak with a nurse regarding visiting hours in special care areas.

For more information or to schedule a tour, call (681) 342-4346

Skilled Nursing Unit (UTCC )

United Transitional Care Center, the hospital-based skilled nursing facility at United hospital Center, provides the right place for many older patients to receive supervised restorative care after hospitalization or an acute illness. It provides the right care at the right time -- when the patient has begun recovery but is not yet well enough to be home.

The hospital-based skilled nursing facility bridges the gap between high-tech hospitalization and family home care. Our specialty is geriatric nursing. We focus on improving the patient's health skills and ability to function within the community. Because the hospital-based skilled nursing facility is affiliated with an acute-care hospital, each patient receives optimal care from the full range of health care disciplines. Medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other departments contribute to the patient's progressive restoration to the highest achievable level of functioning.

Wound Care Center

A cut, scratch or blister is no big deal to most of us; our bodies' natural healing mechanisms kick in and we are back to normal in no time. We take our bodies' ability to heal more or less for granted. But for millions of Americans, it may be much more serious. An estimated five million Americans with diabetes, pressure ulcers, circulatory or other health problems suffer from chronic nonhealing sores, which can result in serious infection, gangrene or even amputation.

United Hospital Center now offers therapy to patients who have wounds that won't heal. UHC's Wound Care Center, located on the second floor of the hospital is operated jointly by UHC and Curative Health Services, a New York-based company which is the national leader in wound care treatment.

Wound care treatment involves a comprehensive approach to nonhealing wounds that includes evaluation, treatment, instructions in home care and, when appropriate, special growth -factor therapy that uses natural platelets from the patient's own blood cells to stimulate healing.

This center brings together an integrated team of wound care specialists working in communication with the patient's primary care physician, all in a single location.

The team includes physicians with advanced training in wound management and a nursing staff trained in care of chronic wounds. The team evaluates and treats the wound, establishes measures to prevent its recurrence, and keeps the primary care doctor informed of the patient's progress. Patients are seen by a physician during each visit.

For more information, call United Hospital Wound Care Center at (304) 842-1034 or 1-800-920-3013.
