Volunteering at United Hospital Center

United Hospital Center has two organizations that actively seek volunteers interested in supporting the mission of UHC. For those interested in participating as a volunteer, opportunities exist with both the Auxiliary to United Hospital Center and with People's Hospice.

Congratulations to the Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year: Jean Stewart

The Auxiliary to United Hospital Center (UHC) is pleased to announce Jean Stewart as the Volunteer of the Year for 2015-16. Stewart began volunteering at United Hospital Center in January of 1998, more than 17 years ago. She has been a great asset since arriving.

Stewart came with marketing experience from her secular job at Hope Gas, so when she retired she began volunteering in the Gift Shop at UHC. She has put her knowledge to work and has taken responsibility to do displays and merchandising in the Gift Shop.

As a great advocate for volunteering, Stewart has recruited several volunteers from her church and her circle of friends, including her husband. She feels so strongly about recruiting volunteers for UHC that she has recently appeared in a recruitment commercial for volunteering.

Stewart takes a proactive approach to everything she does from going above and beyond to help customers, to getting to know the regulars and to giving encouragement to those who need it. She believes patients and visitors that come in and begin to tell their situations need her listening ear.

Having served as Secretary, Membership Chair, on the Nominating Committee and currently is Social Co-Chair, Stewart enjoys serving on the Auxiliary Board of Directors where her fellow board members find her to be a team player.

In early 2015, Stewart accrued 4,887 hours of recorded service. As the UHC Volunteer of the Year, she has already been proactive in recruiting more volunteers and feels everyone should experience that joy and reward.

Jean is married to Harold Stewart for 57 years and has two children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Congratulations Jean!

Information Desk:

Information desk volunteers answer questions visitors and callers have about the location of patients and hospital services. They also sort patient mail. Good people, phone and computer skills are needed for this service.

Hospitality Desk:

Volunteers transport patients being admitted or discharged from the hospital. They also deliver patient mail and run errands.

Volunteers will be trained to sit and rock infants on an on-call basis. Volunteers must complete a basic CPR class and training on holding and comforting newborns. Minimum age 22.

Gift Shops:

Volunteers work in these retail environments as cashier, stocking, selling and ordering supplies. The proceeds from the Gift Shops are used to purchase needed equipment for the hospital. We have two shops. The Gift Shop carries all types of merchandise, flowers, books and gift items. The Artisans' Crossing features items hand crafted in West Virginia.

Volunteers in this area work with the elderly and those recovering from surgery. Have fun calling Bingo or helping with a seasonal party or visiting with patients. These volunteers also help the Activities Coordinator with various projects and paperwork.

Critical Care Desk:

Volunteers are located at the nurses station controlling the flow of visitors into the department, answering the phone, along with some clerical duties.

Cheer Cart:

Volunteers travel throughout the waiting areas and patient rooms to cheer them with free gifts from the cart.

Care Partners:

If you like people and are interested in helping the patients at UHC you would enjoy making rounds to assist patients with non-clinical needs such as helping with meal trays, meal orders, assisting with the comfort of patients by getting them warm blankets, pillows, water or ice and in many other ways.
