United Hospital Center has two organizations that actively seek volunteers interested in supporting the mission of UHC. For those interested in participating as a volunteer, opportunities exist with both the Auxiliary to United Hospital Center and with People's Hospice.
Congratulations to the Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year: Annabell Barnard
Annabell Barnard began volunteering at United Hospital Center in November of 2005 in our Hospitality Service (wheelchair transport service) and at the Information Desk.
Annabell is one of those volunteers that is consistently going above and beyond her normal schedule. She is always willing to substitute for those who are ill or on vacation, etc. She never hesitates when there is a need at the Information Desk. She always arrives early to fill her shift and will stay late if needed. She is very dependable and says yes to every request for help when she is available.
Annabell has a pleasant, warm personality and is well liked by all her coworkers. At the information desk she deals with many different types of people in various frames of mind and is always pleasant, courteous and helpful, never getting flustered, always trying to find the answers they need. Many people desire to serve at the information desk, but it takes a special person who is willing to learn all about the hospital in order to answer questions and direct patients and staff. Annabell has taken on that challenge and is very knowledgeable about our hospital, keeping up to date with any changes.
Annabell is currently serving as the Treasurer of the Auxiliary Board of Directors and has served on several committees including the Telephone Committee, Scholarship Committee and the Nominating Committee. Due to Annabell's excellent skills, we use her knowledge to thoroughly train new volunteers at the information desk. Annabell works well with our teen volunteers also and has trained many of them over the years. The Auxiliary is blessed because we have Annabell serving with us, and the hospital is in good hands when she is manning the information desk.
Information desk volunteers on the main floor answer questions visitors and callers have about the location of patients and hospital services. They also sort patient mail. Good people, phone and computer skills are needed for this job.
Located off the main elevators on each patient floor, the volunteers at these desks assist the nurses on that floor with paperwork, phone calls, collation of material, etc. Good people and phone skills are needed for this job.
Volunteers transport patients being admitted or discharged from the hospital. They also deliver patient mail and run errands for the Department staff where they are located.
Volunteers greet patients who come for testing or to be admitted. They also begin the registration process for patients.
Volunteers work in this retail environment as cashier, stocking, selling and ordering supplies. The proceeds from the Gift Shop are used to purchase needed equipment for the hospital.
Volunteers in this area work with the elderly and those recovering from surgery. Have fun calling Bingo or helping with a seasonal party or visiting with patients. These volunteers also help the Activities Coordinator with various projects and paperwork.
Volunteers are located at the nurses station controlling the flow of visitors into the department, answering the phone, along with some clerical duties.
Volunteers travel throughout the waiting areas and patient rooms to cheer them with free gifts from the cart.

Give a few hours each week to People's Hospice and see just how much you gain from helping others. You'll help patients, their families, visitors or the hospice staff. You might work closely with the patients and their families by providing companionship, love and understanding or you might help with the clerical work at the office, work on special projects, help with fund raising, the speakers' bureau or assist with the bereavement program. Call today and become one of our much-needed volunteers.
